Digitize Your 8mm Video & Make Your Memories Last

Before the days of smartphones, camcorders were the norm for recording video. 8mm was a popular video format used mostly in handheld camcorders. 8mm camcorder video could be one of three different types of tape: Video8, Hi8, and Digital8. These were popular formats during the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s. And although these three formats look very similar, not only is the image quality of each different, but so is the way in which the video is encoded onto the tape when it is recorded.

All camcorders for these formats were phased out of production in the early 2000’s. Video8, Hi8 and Digital8 camcorders and VCRs are becoming increasingly rare to find, especially in proper working condition.  If you’ve come across one of these old camcorder videos and don’t have the equipment to play it, Current Pixel can convert 8mm to DVD or digital file formats for easy viewing. Converting 8mm video formats is a good idea for many reasons – first for viewing on today’s technology, but also for preservation of memories that are stored on this obsolete 8mm video tape technology.

Type of Video Tapes We Convert

Video 8 to DVD or Digital

Video8 is the earliest of the three formats, introduced in 1985 with the Handycam in hopes of competing with the VHS-C format. If you don’t have your old camcorder, you likely don’t have a way to watch your old footage.  Also, Video8 tapes will deteriorate over time and lose their recorded content. Fortunately, our team can transfer Video8 to digital, DVD, or CD for you.

Hi8 to DVD or Digital

Hi8 was Video8’s successor made available many years later, offering a much sharper image quality. As with Video8, Hi8 will deteriorate over time and your cherished memories recorded on these tapes could be lost. It is best to convert Hi8 to DVD to save them for years to come.

Convert Digital 8 to DVD or Digital

Digital 8 is the digital alternative to Video8 and Hi8. It was introduced in 1999 and Digital8 tapes are still manufactured by Sony and available for purchase. However, the camcorders were discontinued in the early 2000s and it is difficult to find one that works properly. Though the technology may not be as dated, you’ll still want to save your footage by converting your Digital8 video tapes to DVDs or digital files for easier viewing and the most longevity.
